Avowed Review — Obsidian's Fantasy RPG Delivers

Obsidian Entertainment returns to first-person RPG territory with a richly detailed fantasy world. Here is our review.

Avowed is Obsidian doing what Obsidian does best: building a world that reacts to your choices, filling it with morally complex characters, and letting you break the main quest path wide open with creative problem-solving.

World and Story

Set in the Living Lands, a frontier region of Eora, Avowed's story involves a spreading plague called the Dreamscourge. The narrative branches significantly based on your faction alliances and companion relationships. The writing is sharp, often funny, and never preachy.

Combat

First-person melee combat has a satisfying weight. Magic combines elements in creative ways — freezing an enemy then shattering them with a hammer strike never gets old. The skill tree encourages specialization but lets you respect freely.
